The Hanna Instruments HI 98160 is a waterproof portable pH, oxygen reduction potential (ORP)/mV, and temperature meter with five-point calibration, calibration alerts, a multilevel LCD screen with onscreen tutorial, a polyetherimide (PEI) body pH electrode, a separate stainless steel temperature probe, and stores up to 500 records. A pH meter is commonly used to measure the pH of substance such as water, food, beer, or wine in laboratory, industrial, and food applications. The multilevel backlit LCD screen simultaneously displays the measurement reading, temperature, and tutorial messages. An auto-end mode ensures readings are taken only when they are stable. A good laboratory practice (GLP) key provides access to comprehensive GLP data and log-on-demand holds up to 500 records. Data can be transferred to a computer with the HI 92000 software (not included) using the USB port (cable not included).

This meter has up to five-point calibration with eight memorized pH buffers and two custom pH buffers to provide precise calibration range adjustment. An electrode condition graph alerts about electrode status. The unit warns with a graphic signal if readings are outside the calibration range, and can provide a reminder of when calibration is due. The pH electrode has a Bayonet Neill-Concelman (BNC) connector and a 1m (3.3') cable. The separate stainless steel temperature probe also has a 1m (3.3') cable. The meter measures ORP/mV when an ORP sensor (not included) is attached in place of the pH electrode. The meter works with three 1.5V AAA batteries (included) for up to 200 hours of continuous operation without backlighting or up to 50 hours when backlit. An adjustable auto power-off feature turns the meter off after five, ten, 20, or 60 minutes of inactivity to extend battery life and can be disabled for readings that require more time. The HI 98160 portable meter also comes with buffer solution sachets and instructions.

A pH meter, also called a sensor or tester, is a device used to measure the acidity or alkalinity of a substance. A pH meter has either a portable or a benchtop body. Many portable meters are handheld devices. Some testers have an internal sensor, and may have a tip and body that fit inside of a container for measurement. A meter is commonly used in many different environments from laboratories to field research and manufacturing facilities. Researchers, manufacturers, and hobbyists use a pH meter in aquaculture, agricultural, wine-making, and water-testing, and for scientific applications. Some pH meters may measure additional parameters such as dissolved oxygen (DO), conductivity (also called electro-conductivity or EC), temperature, total dissolved solids (TDS), salinity, resistivity, or oxygen reduction potential (ORP)/mV.

Hanna Instruments manufactures analytical instrumentation and supplies, including pH meters, electrodes, chemical reagents, and buffer solutions. The company, founded in 1978 and headquartered in Woonsocket, RI, meets International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standard 9001.
